Gift with purchase

What is Gift with Purchase (GWP)?

Gift with purchase (GWP) is a marketing strategy where a company offers a free gift when a customer makes a purchase. In the promotional products field, GWPs are often used to encourage sales, increase brand loyalty, and enhance customer experience. The gift typically complements the main product or adds extra value, incentivizing customers to choose one brand over another.

The concept of GWP dates back to the early days of retail when companies offered small, often branded items to thank their customers. Over time, this practice evolved, becoming a more strategic marketing tool. Today, companies use GWPs not just to thank customers but also to boost sales and create brand ambassadors.

When implementing a GWP strategy, businesses start by selecting a main product and a complementary gift. Once the customer makes a qualifying purchase, they receive the gift, adding value to their experience.

Tools and Techniques Used for Gift with Purchase (GWP) in Promotional Products

In the world of promotional products, several tools and techniques are employed to make GWPs more attractive and effective. One key tool is product customization, where the gift is tailored with the brand's logo or message, creating a memorable experience for the customer. Another approach is using eco-friendly or sustainable items as GWPs, which aligns with the increasing demand for environmentally conscious products.

Promotional campaigns, both online and in-store, are used to highlight the GWP offer. Marketing teams may also use social media to build excitement around the free gift, enhancing the visibility and appeal of the main product.

Common Applications of GWP in the Promotional Products Industry

Gift with purchase promotions are widely used in industries like cosmetics, electronics, and retail. For example, a skincare brand might offer a branded makeup bag as a gift when a customer buys a set of products. In the electronics sector, companies often give away accessories such as personalized earphones or laptop sleeves with a high-ticket purchase.

In the promotional products field, GWP often involves branded items that tie into larger campaigns. For example, companies might offer custom notebooks, pens, or tote bags that feature their logo and branding.

Type of Gift Example Industry Use
Custom Tote Bags Branded eco-friendly tote Retail stores offering eco-friendly products as gifts for large purchases.
Personalized Notebooks Logo-imprinted notebook Given away by tech companies for software or hardware purchases.
Branded Earphones Personalized earphones Offered by electronics companies with the purchase of new devices.
Custom Water Bottles Reusable water bottle with logo Fitness brands giving water bottles to promote healthy lifestyles.
Cosmetic Pouches Branded makeup bag Used by skincare brands to complement product bundles.

Advantages of Using GWP in Promotional Products

The gift with purchase approach offers several benefits for both brands and customers. It boosts customer engagement, as people are more likely to complete a purchase when they receive an extra item for free. GWPs can also increase brand loyalty by making customers feel valued and encouraging repeat purchases.

For brands, GWPs provide a cost-effective way to distribute promotional products while simultaneously increasing sales. They also create opportunities for companies to showcase new or complementary products, potentially driving future sales.

Benefits Description
Boosts Sales Customers are more likely to make a purchase when they receive a free gift, increasing overall sales volume.
Enhances Brand Loyalty By offering a gift, brands create a positive experience, leading to increased loyalty and repeat purchases.
Increases Customer Engagement Customers feel valued and appreciated when they receive an additional product, leading to greater engagement with the brand.
Cost-effective Marketing Tool Distributing promotional products as GWPs allows brands to promote their logo and message while creating a memorable customer experience.

GWP vs. Other Promotional Techniques

Compared to other promotional techniques like discounts or free shipping, GWP stands out because it offers something tangible and memorable. While a discount reduces the price, a GWP adds perceived value to the purchase. Unlike giveaways, which often require no purchase, GWPs ensure that customers are committed to buying, making it a more targeted marketing tool.

Challenges of Implementing GWP in Promotional Products

While GWP promotions are highly effective, they also come with some challenges. One key limitation is the cost involved in sourcing and producing the free gifts, which can affect the overall profitability of the promotion. Additionally, selecting the right gift that resonates with the target audience is crucial. Offering a gift that doesn’t align with customer preferences may not generate the desired effect.

I ordered 100 branded lighters for a small business in September and was helped through the process by Mark S. The process was really straightforward, the products arrived on time (actually slightly earlier than expected, shipping with TNT from mainland Europe to the UK) and the quality of the mini clipper lighters (and the printing of the logo) is better than I was hoping for. We will definitely be using loopper again when we do other runs of branded products.
